Re: Is it Me or is Alex Salmond just a bully?
He is not a bully but a very shrewd politician. He has got the Westminster suited and booted, cloned, elite running around in a muck sweat because they have severely underestimated him an his appeal.

Cameron et al are literally afraid of going up to Scotland because they realise that their very appearance gives votes to the yes campaign.

This run for Scottish independence was signalled years ago and Salmond had used a Bullingdon boys run government to his own advantage.

How ironic it would be that a Prime Minister with a very Scottish surname is culpable in the break up of the UK.

To me there could be an advantage in being separated from an independent Scotland.

We could reboot our democratic systems for a start and also refocus on where we stand in the world.

Lloyds/HBOS and TSB will also be down here within 12 hours of a yes vote.

Independence will undoubtedly mean that a large number of companies will move their central functions and head offices south. The much derided RBS, for instance, will have to move to a Head Office to London and probably have to revert to NatWest Group ! Their Fred Goodwin built Edinburgh offices can become a hotel for all those new tourists who will visit an independent Scotland. Others will have to do likewise. Sounds like a good idea and a boast for the economy .... Of England.

And the opposing view, it could be said, wilfully forgets that things could get better in an independent Scotland.

Is Salmond playing on people's blind optimism and imagination? Quite possibly so. But that being true doesn't necessarily make the idea of independence as a whole a bad one, or a good one for that matter. It's unrelated.

What I also think is being wilfully ignored, or under-reported, is the simple fact that a key motivation for voters is just to be in sole control of their affairs, in good times and bad, governed by a party (whichever party that is - there's no guarantee it has to be the SNP) that they have voted for, rather than, in part, by a party in Westminster that they would never vote for.

Re: Is it Me or is Alex Salmond just a bully?
That sort of viewpoint wilfully forgets that things could get worse should Scotland go for independence.

However one person's idea of things getting better isn't necessarily the same as someone else's. Hence why the blank canvas of what independence means is so powerful.

Re: Is it Me or is Alex Salmond just a bully?
The debate isn't about whether or not they're well off as part of the UK.

The debate is whether or not they'd be even better off as an independent nation. A lot people would look at what has been achieved without full control of their affairs and suspect they would be.

Or it shows them that they're actually pretty well off as part of the UK.

Re: Is it Me or is Alex Salmond just a bully?
There was a lot of detail missing in the White Paper, but you can't blame people in putting their faith in him.

Tuition fees are already free, and prescriptions are now free. That would lead people to wonder how else they could be better off if they had sole control of their affairs.

Re: Is it Me or is Alex Salmond just a bully?
It does seem to me that the Yes campaign involves creating a blank canvas of what they want to achieve so that the voters can let their imagination runaway with what a free Scotland will be. And then not explaining how they'l pay for it.

In the past week on facebook I've been told that if Scotland wins independence everyone will be a few grand a year better off, child poverty will be eradicated, food banks won't be needed any more, car duty will be 50 p a litre less, students will never have to pay tuition fees and the NHS will provide a far better but still free service.

And no taxes will be increased. Presumably ever.

Bloke's a twat. He wants Scotland to sail off on its own, ably supported in every danger area by the good old English.

In bed or out of barracks is the old expression.

I dont think that Salmond has taken into account the depth of feeling about a "currency union" in the rest of the UK.

If he thinks for one minute that the public will stand for a foreign country being tied to our currency and all that entails, then he is sorely mistaken.

It would be political suicide for any party to give that the go ahead.

That's the thing, the scots are exact the same as 99.999% of Englishman in that they're governed by a load of toffs from another world making decisions hundreds of miles away without our say so

Re: Is it Me or is Alex Salmond just a bully?
Why do the Scots who don't want the Tories to govern them think that it's unfair?
Many people wherever they live including ENGLAND don't get the government they voted for, it's called DEMOCRACY!

Their whole argument is based on not being governed by what they percieve as England just because the House of Parliament is in London, however they don't mind keeping the Pound as it benefits them.

They're economy will be dependant on North sea gas and oil which could run out within 40/50 years, which says it all about their plans.
